日本の教育現場では、批判的思考力の育成や異文化理解を促進する取り組みが十分に進んでいないと言われている。批判的思考力の育成には、学習者が情報を深く読み解き、自らの視点を構築することが不可欠であり、異文化理解を促進するためには、異なる文化的背景や価値観を持つ人々と交流し、共に学びながら相互理解を深めることが重要である。田中教授は「これら二つの要素を統合的に扱う教育モデルを提案し、教育現場で実践することで、学習者は多様な視点を理解し、主体的に考え、行動できる人材へと成長する」と、教育改革の必要性を語る。

学習者の思考力育成のために田中教授が取り組んでいるのが、英語学習におけるクリティカル・リーディングとCLIL^※（内容言語統合型学習）の研究だ。クリティカル・リーディングは、英語の絵本や文学作品を教材に、文章を批判的に読み解く力を養成する。CLILでは、工学的内容と英語を統合し、学習者が具体的な内容を深く理解し、協働しながら思考力を高める指導法を確立した。 本研究の特徴は、教育現場での実践にある。指導方法や教科書の改善に研究の知見を反映し、現場での具体的な課題解決を追求するため、学内外の研究者との共同研究も積極的に展開している。学術的意義と現場のニーズの両立を追求し、教育現場と研究をつなぎながら学びの質の向上を実現させることが狙いだ。

これらの研究成果は、国内外での学会発表や査読付き論文として発表したほか、実際に小学校から高校までの授業にも導入している。直近では、SSH（スーパーサイエンスハイスクール）^※指定校において、CLILに基づく英語講座や研究発表指導を実施し、その成果を基に教材開発と改善を進めている。

現在の研究は、文学と英語教育、工学／ものづくりと英語教育という異なる領域の融合を基盤としている。今後は、開発した教材・指導法の教育現場への普及を図るとともに、これらの教育モデルの他分野への応用可能性を検証していく。さらに、音楽やスポーツなどの技能と英語を融合させた、多角的な視点からの文化理解の可能性を探究するという。将来的には、大学生向けの教材開発や大学教育への導入も視野に入れている。

「クリティカル・リーディングやCLILを通じて養われる思考力と批判的な視点は、小学校から大学院までの教育課程で、文学や工学など多様な分野に応用できる。それは社会人となってからも、課題解決や論理的な意思決定に不可欠な能力となるだろう。本研究が、未来の学びの形を再構築する一助となり、多様な教育現場での応用が広がることを願っている」と田中教授は意気込みを語る。

Enhancing English language education through critical reading and CLIL to foster critical thinking and cross-cultural understanding

While there have been efforts to develop critical thinking skills and cross-cultural understanding in Japanese education, progress has been gradual. Critical thinking requires students to engage deeply with texts, analyze information thoroughly, and form their own perspectives. Fostering cross-cultural understanding, on the other hand, involves meaningful interaction with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, enabling students to develop mutual respect and gain deeper insight into different ways of thinking. Recognizing the importance of both, Professor Tanaka emphasizes the need to integrate these elements into education. She proposes an education model that combines both critical thinking and cross-cultural understanding in the classroom, aiming to nurture students who can appreciate multiple perspectives and make thoughtful decisions.

To develop students’ thinking abilities, she conducts research that incorporates critical reading and CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) into English language education. Critical reading enhances students’ capacity to read and analyze texts critically, drawing on a variety of teaching materials, including English picture books and literary works. CLIL, on the other hand, merges English with content from various fields. Her current focus is on engineering and manufacturing,enabling students to gain a deeper understanding of subject matter while fostering collaboration and problem-solving skills.

A distinctive feature of her research is its emphasis on classroom application. She actively engages in joint research with colleagues both within and outside her university, aiming to improve teaching methods and materials based on empirical findings. Her goal is to enhance the quality of learning by bridging academic research and classroom practice, balancing scholarly value with practical educational needs.

Her research outcomes have been presented at academic conferences in Japan and abroad, published in peer-reviewed journals, and implemented in schools ranging from elementary to high school. Most recently, English language seminars and research presentation training based on CLIL have been introduced at Super Science High Schools (SSH*), with results being used to further develop and refine instructional materials and methods.

*SSH (Super Science High School): High schools designated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to provide advanced education in science and technology.

Currently, she explores the integration of diverse fields—such as literature and engineering—into English education. Looking ahead, she aims to expand her teaching materials and methods across various subjects and educational levels. She also plans to explore new ways of fostering cultural understanding by integrating English with fields such as music and sports. In addition, she is considering the development of English language textbooks for university students and the broader application of her educational model into higher education.

Speaking passionately about her work, she says, “The ability to think critically—developed through critical reading and CLIL—can be applied to a variety of fields such as literature and engineering, and throughout all levels of education, from elementary school to graduate school. I believe this will equip students with the skills to solve problems and make logical decisions even after they enter the workforce. I hope my research can help reshape the future of learning and extend its impact to a wider range of classrooms.”
